THE SONGS One Light in the Dark (Rob Crosby) I wrote the first verse on an airline sickness bag and finished it later that day when I got to my piano. It was the first song we recorded for this CD. Beyond the Passion (Rob Crosby/Stephanie Bentley) I had the title and the groove but Stephanie and I wrote the lyrics and melody as a team. Pray For Me (Rob Crosby/Allen Shamblin) I went out to Allen's house to write one morning and he had this title. It took us at least two hours to finally come up with the very simple chorus. Then we worked all afternoon coming up with the images and story of the man on the busy street. We got back together the next week and wrote the bridge and thought it was finished. But my publisher, Jerry Crutchfield, asked us to dig a little deeper to write a third verse. We gave it a shot and that turned out to be our favorite part of the song. Alice's Eyes (Rob Crosby, Liz Hengber, Georgia Middleman) Liz had this cool idea, and we had a blast writing it. Thanks to The Beatles for some musical influence. Secret Place (Rob Crosby/Stephanie Bentley) How Far Do I Have To Fall? (Rob Crosby/Sonny Lemaire/Kurt Howell) Lost in Heaven (Rob Crosby/Stephanie Bentley) This is another song influenced by John Lennon's music. I Can Bend (Rob Crosby/Paul Overstreet) I wrote the opening verse on the way to Paul's house. I called on my mobile and sang it to him. When I got there, he had half the chorus written and we sat down and finished the song that day. Rise Above It (Rob Crosby/Carl Perkins/Debbie Perkins/Dottie Moore) Dottie introduced me to Carl Perkins at a music industry party - what a thrill. Then he actually invited us to drive to Jackson, Tennessee and write! Debbie, Carl's daughter, joined us. Dottie and I had come up with the title, and what later became the second verse, on the way to Jackson. Carl had the idea for the opening lines and we all had fun that day. Dottie and I went on to write five or six more songs with Carl before he died and I consider knowing Carl and working with him one of the greatest honors in my life. He was pure talent and as sweet, kind, and humble as a person can be - always praising God. We lost a lot when Carl died, but he left a huge mark in musical history. She's A Natural (Rob Crosby/Rick Bowles) This song is special to me. It was a top-ten hit for me in the early nineties and audiences have always made me feel good about it. I wrote the original version sitting in the sun in my backyard. Then, my buddy, Rick Bowles, heard it and had some great ideas to make it better, like "going down the road less traveled" (Robert Frost), which really added to the song. Michael Johnson almost cut it in 1989 - I'm glad it worked out for me to have a hit with it. This new recording is certainly my favorite!
